Anne-Marie Hardy and Helen McKenzie were the deserving recipients of a trip-of-a-lifetime which took them on an unforgettable palliative tour of Singapore and Malaysia. Their tireless efforts and dedication to the patients of Cabrini Prahran were recognised with the Brian H Gillies Palliative Nursing Travel Scholarship.

Catherine Grenville
Catherine, 3 North’s Nurse Manager, was invited to discuss her experiences volunteering in Tonga and the Solomon Islands at the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand 2016 Annual Scientific Meeting, held on the Gold Coast in April. Her presentation focussed on encouraging future participation in volunteer work, and discussing the challenges faced when mentoring nurses in developing countries. Her attendance was partially-funded by a $1000 Medical Staff travel grant.

Respiratory nurses Lisa O’Driscoll and Ivan Nuguid were recipients of the Brendon Finnegan Professional Development Grant. They visited the Pulmonary Fibrosis Clinic at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney and attended the Australian Rare Lung Disease short course in October 2015.

In October 2015, Betty Ryan (Associate Nurse Unit Manager, Emergency Department) attended the 13th International Conference for Emergency Nurses in Brisbane to make an oral presentation outlining the pilot study results of Cabrini’s Emergency Telephone Follow-up Service. Her attendance was supported by a Medical Staff Association Travel Grant.

Henry ‘Jonggy’ Vizconde and Nicky Hondros
Henry and Nicky, clinical coordinator and team leader respectively at Cabrini Prahran, were awarded $5,000 each via the Brian H Gillies Palliative Nursing Travel Scholarship to embark on an adventure of a lifetime in February 2015. Their journey took them to London to tour St Christopher’s Hospice - the first modern hospice – and to the Netherlands to attend a bioethics course on ‘suffering, death and palliative care’.
